FINLAND & NORWAY TRAILER // TET Finland, Nordkapp, Lofoten // KTM 1290 Super Adventure R
This trip marks my second journey to Norway and my first to Finland. Over the course of two weeks, I will be traveling along lonely gravel roads in Finland to reach the northernmost point of Europe during the longest day of the year. On my way south, I will explore the west coast of Norway, including the breathtaking Lofoten Islands. This motorcycle adventure will conclude in southern Norway, where I will revisit some highlights from my previous trip and discover new areas.
The trip will be released as a three-part series, with the full film available later in the year. This trip was my second long trip on my 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.

I cannot stress out enough the benefits of having the manual in digital form. Search function, going back and forth between the different steps, zooming in on pictures to see precisely what's what. And also, a tablet/keyboard can be wiped off while paper will just stain. And while I'm not a very big fan of advanced tech, having in the future some "AI" (or neural network to be more precise ) to help with the repair in combination with a proper set of AR glasses would allow anybdy to fix their bikes/cars. But I guess that'll make us a bit dumber :))

Is this what Regina claims? Is that genuinely how they market the chain?? What mileage do they accept as “normal life”? As an engineer, I’d have to say this has got to be bollocks unless they define the durability as something really low like 10k miles… If they make the chain so robust that it can survive without any lubrication, the sprockets would wear out pretty quickly. If you don’t want to do chain maintenance, buy a bike with shaft drive FFS.

My KTM 1290 engine was broke within a year when I was on a trip to Austria (I come from Netherlands). I ended up 20 KM away from the KTM factory, and I needed to wait more then 2 hours for the Mobility Service (hell focking long) and they took me to KTM Salzburg. KTM Salzburg helped me friendly on Friday late afternoon but could not fix it in a few days, because the I would go home on the next Monday I took my KTM back to the Netherlands back in a van (we were in Austria with 30 motorcycles and we had a Van with us for luggage). I could not get a rent/service KTM for free so my trip was over.... When I was back in the Netherlands I took the KTM to my local dealer and they would fix it within de warranty, but it would take some time. I still could not get a rent/service bike for free from KTM/Dealer, I needed to rent one by my self (but thats way to expensive for a warranty case...), and it was July, so in the middle of the motor season...... I complained at social media about it and after a few hours I got a message from KTM Netherlands and they gave me a KTM within a day for free to use when my own KTM got repaired (+1 for KTM Netherlands).... It took more then 12 weeks that my own KTM was repaired and I got allot of issues with my local dealer because they were lying alot agains me. They said they were working on my KTM, but they didn't, every week when I came by it stands in the same corner in the same state (they didn't gave me updates or some thing)... I was furious, because my KTM ended up every time in de back of the line... Finally after 12 weeks they repaired my KTM, I was happy. But later I had issues again with my local KTM dealer because they didn't replace the oil and oil filters during the 30,000 km service even I paid for a full 30.000 km service (KTM dealer is expensive, and because warranty you need to go to the KTM dealer)... On the 40.000 service that I did on my own I found out that they didn't changed the oil or oil filters, they never told me... So I was furious, and I bought my new KTM 1290 at a different KTM dealer. I never go back to my locale dealer again.

@@MotoVibes First 2 a 3 weeks I did not get any thing by the dealer even it was a warranty case. So I complained on social media and the day after KTM Netherlands gave me a KTM for the whole period (for 10 weeks or so). So credits for KTM Netherlands. I bought 2 KTM's at this dealer, but because of this experience I bought my 3rd KTM some where else.. Funny thing, it was a KTM with a license plate from Austria. So I drove 10 weeks in the Netherlands with a Austria license plate.

The original chain on my 2018 Triumph Tiger went 26K mi. (41K km). Replaced it because it was getting some tight joints (kinks) but was not stretched too much. Lubed it 6 or 7 times with yamaha onroad chain lube and made 3 or 4 small adjustments. Sprockets showed virtually no wear. Apparently the oem chain was very good quality because I have never come close to getting that much life out of any other chain on my jap bikes. Could not see a brand on the chain but would like to know who made it.

There is no doubt that a 21 inch front wheel is the best option for serious off road riding but few adventure riders will do enough really serious stuff to justify giving up the considerable dynamic advantages of a 19 inch on tarmac. Please consider that every First World Record established by motorcycle riders has been on a machine with a 19 inch front wheel, yet todays showroom salesmen will try to tell you that a 21 inch wheel is essential for adventure riding. Here are just a few examples of 19 inch wheel record holding riders in date order. 1935 Florence Blenkiron and Theresa Wallach, first humans to cross the Sahara on any form of motorised transport (Panther). 1964 Steve McQueen, first Hollywood actor to win a sliver medal at the ISDT (Triumph). 1973 Ted Simon around the world and write a bestseller about it (Triumph). 1980 Elspeth Beard first woman around the world (BMW).1994 Dave Barr, first man around the world with 2 artificial legs (Sportster). 2004 Ewen McGregor and Charlie Boorman on "the long Way Around" (BMW). 2019 Henry Crew youngest person around the world (Ducati). A tiny sample but there are hundreds more unofficial records all achieved with 19 inch front wheels, I may even hold a couple myself such as the 7,500 mile TAT in 27 days.

I had the 1290 SAT after a BMW R1200gsa. The only positive thing I can say, was the superiour power. Everything else was a Down grade. Poor build quality, poor balance, excesessive heat from the engine, very poor wind protection. If I ever buy a Ktm again, it will only be an Exc for enduro riding. 😖

I think you may have misunderstood the claim from Regina. They clearly state that the chain doesn’t require lubrication, not that it won’t need adjusting. By “maintenance free” they’re simply referring to the lubrication aspect of chain servicing. A chain that never stretches or wears is a physical impossibility. On top of that, even if the chain never wore, the sprockets do, which would necessitate chain tensioning…..

HOW on earth do KTM continue to get away with this horrible quality and warranty cover??? In my opinion this is a massive problem that they are trying to keep under wraps so THANKS for your honest video. They are now manufacturing many components and even engines in China to save money but the quality is not there. AND many of the KTM dealers started out as off road service dealers so when they find all of this mega electonics and 180 horsepower bikes they basically have no idea and no training to fix these beasts!!!! BUY YOURSELF A JAPANESE BIKE and enjoy the boring reliability and strong resale values please!!!! I have covered many many miles around Europe on my Yamahas and they have never let me down!!!!

It’s capable and well designed

No warranty..... and to be told by ..the so called experts.at ktm.told me it was down to lack of lubrication. Sand in the crankcase....as plain as day. So i fixed myself and still got it so.....up yours ktm. Never will i be buying one again

My experience with my KTM RC Around 9k kms in and less than a year of ownership (it's dealership maintained at exact service intervals as stated in manual and dealership advise) and probably rested from riding as i became busy. On one day i decided to ride on my way back home from a very short and relaxed ride from the café. I suddenly experienced my rear wheel locking up and i fishtailed to an abrupt stop. So i had to remove my drive chain to able to push the bike to the closest mechanic (of all the days where i was just relaxed). Upon opening the engine (i was just curious what caused it) there i found several tooth gears scattered inside. Ok. Nothing can be done. Paid a towing service to get it home. Called the dealership said i was bringing the bike in for a possible warranty claim. God damn. What happened next was just unbelievable. I waited 8 months for a complete warranty and to get my motorcycle back. 8 long months. I even begged for a loaner bike for the meantime as i was missing out on the riding season with my club and riding mates. And what happens? Plea rejected. Sorry was the answer. 6-7 months into waiting i came in for a surprise visit and found my KTM covered in dust and other spart parts from other KTMs resting on top of it. Lol! What a shitty experience and the staff were rude! I can tell you definitely i will not be keeping a KTM as a one and only bike ever again.

That is an absolute horror story - how was that not a warranty claim for a motorcycle less than a year old with such low mileage? I would be furious too. May I ask where you live and where this dealership is? Thank you for sharing your story.

Crash bar bolted to the engine case, wow

They all are but this cheap one did not have enough flex built in and transferred all the impact energy to the motor- this was not a hard crash- just a typical drop of the bike after Thomas lost his balance

In south africa here ktm service is rubbish people are not all well trained because mechanics dont travel to ktm hq for training so your best bet is your local friendly dealer. Sell you a bike but spares are issue with ktm here bmw is most popular

If things would have turned out differently there would be a lot more to be upset about - in the end I was able to continue my tour thanks to my friend Stephan who lend me one of his motorcycles and eventually my motorcycle received a new engine as part of the warranty claim.

Just get a 2024 Africa Twin and be done with it. Quality and reliability is peace of mind and that is truly valuable.
